Vers le milieu du XVIe siècle, après huit années au couvent de la Visitation, Hélène Campireali, jeune fille de noble famille, regagne Albano pour y vivre près de son père. Un voisin, Jules Branciforte, s'éprend d'elle au scandale du seigneur de Campireali qui voit d'un mauvais oeil la cour que ce jeune homme pauvre fait à sa fille. Un soir d'été, grâce à une longue canne, Jules élève jusqu'à la fenêtre d'Hélène un bouquet - et elle décide de s'en saisir.
